Edwin Flukes (c.1837–?) was a professional photographer established at 41 Milsom Street, Bath, during the 1860s and 1870s. His work included conventional portraiture, but he also undertook substantial architectural and topographical photography.
Flukes is documented as having been commissioned to photograph Butleigh Court, Somerset, in 1871. The assignment involved several journeys from Bath and resulted in a large-format negative; the commission was valued at three guineas, exclusive of travelling expenses. When the negative was accidentally destroyed while being returned by the Great Western Railway, Flukes successfully claimed compensation for his considerable expenses.
In the same year he exhibited a series of large architectural photographs of Wells Cathedral at a meeting of the Photographic Society. The photographs, made in 12-by-10-inch format for the Science and Art Department at South Kensington, included detailed views of the cathedral’s west front and its sculptural decoration.
Four topographical carte-de-visite views of Wiltshire are also known, extending his work beyond Bath and Somerset. Flukes continued to produce portraits alongside this architectural and topographical work; surviving examples include CDVs from his Milsom Street studio dated to the early 1870s.
His career demonstrates the breadth of work undertaken by an established Bath photographer, from studio portraiture to commissioned architectural photography and inexpensive local views. |
